CONESTOGA GOLF CLUB
RUNDOWN: Conestoga is the newest golf offering in the city of Mesquite. We were excited to add this course to our agenda on our most recent trip to Mesquite. Boy are we glad that we did! While the overall course may not be as visually impressive as Wolf Creek, you will not be disappointed in your round. The front nine would be considered Wolf Creek esq. as you wind between canyons and descend over cliffs. Prepare yourself to hit it straight as balls that are sprayed into the desert are deemed unplayable and will result in a one stroke penalty and a lateral drop. A few of us could attest to the need to have a few extra balls in the golf bag haha. However, losing a few balls will not distract you from the beauty and enjoyment of the front nine!
The back nine will be spent more out in the open and winding through newer housing developments. Don't expect that to diminish the overall play of this course, because the back nine holds its own. The back nine will provide a little more open feel which may be welcome for some golfers. Overall, I have zero complaints about Conestoga as the conditioning and staff were all superb! Enjoy the desert landscape and the large bunkers from afar and this will definitely be one of the better rounds of golf Mesquite has to offer!

REVIEW AND HIGHLIGHTS
Hole 2 Par 3 - 188 Yards
Right off the bat you come to one of my favorite holes on the course. If you love a severe drop in elevation on a par 3, then you have come to the right place! From tee to green you will drop some 100 feet to reach the putting surface. Hopefully you have hit the range beforehand and have your distances dialed in. The large green is definitely wider than it is deep. A rock face rises from the desert to the putting surface and surrounds the greens front left side and wraps around the entire back of the green. Do not go left or long on this hole or you will have to use the first drop area the course provides. The wind will definitely be a factor on this hole and will play a big part in what club to pull. Pick the correct club and watch the ball soar and hang in the air before sitting on this large putting surface. The view on this hole is just providing the first glimpse into what is to come on this course.
Hole 4 Par 4 - 394 Yards
Have you ever made it to a hole on a golf course that forces you to lay up off the tee and you immediately hate it? Well, that will not be the case on this lay up hole! While you could attempt to pull out the big dog and take a rip at this one, chances are slim you come out on top here. Take your medicine and lay up with a mid iron because you will be glad that you did! The approach to the green is what makes this hole shine on this course! Running along the top of a cliff edge in the mid-point of this hole you will find a picturesque wood fence that you must keep away from, but hit your ball over. With another large decline in elevation you will be hitting into another well protected green that has a little more slope than what the previous holes have shown. Take a couple pictures as this hole is one to be enjoyed and remembered. Enjoy the layup here and knock your second shot stiff on this green. Walk away with par and the memories and get ready for more great golf!
Hole 6 Par 5 - 536 Yards
Welcome to the courses signature hole! While this is one of the flatter holes you will encounter on this course, you will see from the tee box why this tops the list here. From the box you can hit one of your longer clubs to a very gracious landing area. Don't try to muscle a huge drive out there as you will encounter the first deep trough that runs through the fairway. Longer hitters can hit the landing zone and still have a chance to reach this mid range par 5 in two, but it will not be easy! You will find a bridge that leads to a second generous landing area before you encounter the second trough running through the fairway. Layup there and you will have a great shot into this green fronted by a large unforgiving bunkers. I would say most players are getting on this in two because you have to hit a flawless shot to get onto this green in two! You will need to smash a long iron or fairway wood from the first landing area, avoid the second trough, and avoid the front bunkers to have a chance. If you accomplish that, don't go long as there are more bunkers that will devour your ball and make par your best score possible. Overall, play this hole smart and to your known abilities and you could possibly enjoy a birdie on their signature hole!
Hole 10 Par 3 - 198 Yards
Kicking off the back nine you will no longer be winding through the washes, canyons and cliffs the front nine will offer you. However, this longer par 3 holds it's own with the best holes on the course. This is the most difficult par 3 on the property for multiple reasons. You have a forced carry over water, the green is protected by multiple bunkers, distance forces you to use a low iron and you will most likely be distracted by the view. Did I mention that you are hitting to one of the more shallow greens on the property as well? All in all the hole is intimidating and can surely ruin your hopes to score better on the back nine. One of our playing partners hit the green in one, which you would think ends the difficulty of this hole. The green however has teeth of its own as a large ridge runs front to back through the middle it. Our playing partner put himself on the wrong side of the ridge and walked into a nice 4-putt, double bogey! Ouch! Needless to say, this hole will keep you on your toes and really test your game!
Hole 17 Par 4 - 423 Yards
This is one of my favorite holes on the whole property. I'm sure it had something to do with it being my first par in what seemed like forever! The wind had definitely kicked up on us late in the day and provided some large scores to my scorecard. This hole ran directly downwind and helped bring about a little confidence. There is a desert area that sat about 268 yards from the tee as we played from the Silver tees on the back nine. It ran across the fairway and held us up from pulling driver on this hole. That was probably for the better as the driver had started to fail me the farther into the round we progressed. I pulled out a 3 iron and proceeded to hit the most crisp iron shot I have hit in years! It caught the wind and the downhill slope and ended up going 260 yards to the end of the fairway! A new confidence built up in me with my long irons that ultimately would last the rest of our trip. Once at my ball there is a large hill to the left side of the fairway. If you lay up too far on the drive you will be forced to carry over or around that hill to get to the green. The large desert area surrounds the left side of the green along with some bunkers, so keep right here. I walked away with a par but really enjoyed this hole tee to green!
