WOLF CREEK GOLF CLUB
RUNDOWN: Welcome to one of the most impressive courses in the world! No matter your score, I guarantee you walk away from this course in awe and with some great memories. If you have only played this course on the Tiger Woods video game, do yourself a favor and book a round of golf here immediately. With all the courses in the area and Vegas only an hour away, Mesquite NV is one of my favorite golf destinations.
Currently the course sits at number 48 on the Top 100 U.S. Public Golf courses list. While the other courses may be enjoyable or more of a golfers test, this will top your list of most enjoyable rounds ever played. You will see some of the most insane elevation changes that you have encountered on a course. Whether you are hitting up, down or over a mountain, you will rarely run into a flat shot on this course. The views are impressive and can be down right distracting at times (in a good way). Wolf Creek is not always a grip it and rip it style course and that only adds to the enjoyment factor. You will be forced to hit the correct shot in order to avoid the dangers of the course. Everything outside of the green in front of you and in the desert is played as a lateral hazard. The desert is an environmentally protected area and is not playable. Bring a few extra balls since you are bound to spray a few and just enjoy the course for what it is, fun! It's meant to be a test of your golfing skills, but also to just be bigger and better than anything you have experienced. I could literally write about every single hole on the course, there really is not a downer on the whole routing. However, I'll save you some reading and help build anticipation by highlighting just a few instead. The only thing I wish they had here was a better practice area. The range is irons only and the putting green is small. That will not distract from your round though. Heading to the first tee will erase any memory of the limited warm up areas. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Buckle up, the roller coaster of great golf is about to begin!

REVIEW AND HIGHLIGHTS
Hole 2 Par 4 - 445 Yards
I can almost guarantee that you have never walked up so many stairs to get to the tee box as you will on this hole. Perched way up high you will be treated to one of the best views on the course. Do yourself a favor and put your hiking boots on to get to the furthest tee box. From there you will be able to see what is really in front of you on this hole. The hole doglegs pretty heavily to the left and plays extremely downhill tee to fairway. There is a large landing area you can place your tee shot in or you can try and cut some of the corner to a narrow, blind, fairway. In front of you is one of the large desert hills that provides a stark contrast between itself and the green grass below. Once you get to your ball, be prepared for an uphill approach to a well guarded green. This may not be one of the most difficult holes on the property, but it is going to provide you a glimpse of what to expect on the holes ahead.
Hole 5 Par 5 - 490 Yards
Go ahead and break out the big stick on this one, you will need it if you want to try and hit this green in two. You should feel confident enough to swing away here as the landing area is very generous. The tee is well elevated from the fairway and the ball will seem to float forever on you! Keep right off the tee as the creek is definitely in play down the left side. Even if you make it to your desired landing area, don't expect the next shot to be a walk in the park. The approach to the green plays well uphill and the green is guarded by multiple very deep bunkers. There is an area on the front right of the green that will allow you to bump the ball through and on to the putting surface. However, behind this green is a large slope that can be used to bring your ball back towards the pin. What I am getting at here is, take an extra club or two up the hill and the hill should hold up a long shot. Putting on this green is a little tougher as a large ridge runs through the left back of the green.
Hole 8 Par 3 - 248 Yards
The signature par 3 on this course definitely will not disappoint, nor will it provide an easy par. The tee is set high above the putting surface and there is trouble in most every direction. You lone bailout is on the right side of the hole as there is more short grass than is viewable from the box. The creek runs down the left side of the hole and weaves into the front left portion of the green. It continues to wind all the way around the entire back portion of the green before flowing out of view to the right. The green is fairly large, so hitting it seems doable even from the tips. You will generally be playing into a slight breeze here as well, which won't aid your cause. Playing 5 wood from the back tees, all four of our balls sailed high into the breeze and pulled across the green and into the hazard. Luckily for us there was a drop area about 80 yards from the green. Even if you don't walk away with a favorable score, I guarantee you will love this hole.
Hole 12 Par 5 - 560 Yards
This is one of the most visually impressive par 5's I have ever had the chance to play. Once again you will play from an extremely elevated tee box that keeps your ball just floating in the air. A large pond sits on the left side of the fairway and will definitely be in play for many players. You will need to keep your tee ball well right as there are large ridges in the left fairway that will propel your ball to the water. Myself and Kevin both hit what we thought were perfect drives, only to find out they both kicked left off the ridges and into the hazard. Once safely in the fairway you will need to still avoid the water that runs all the way to the putting surface. Just to make the approach into this more narrow green even more difficult, there is a second pond on the right side that starts at the front of the green. With all of the difficulties that lie ahead of you here, it may be tough to walk away with a low score. Although it plays tough, this is a hole that will leave a lasting image in your mind, so soak it up!
Hole 14 Par 4 - 444 Yards
As you stand on this tee box you will be very aware as to why this is the most photographed hole on the golf course. The entire hole is visible from the elevated tee box and sweeps hard from right to left. The fairway begins at the lowest part of this hole before sweeping left and upwards towards the green. The fairway is split and you would be smart to keep your shot right and avoid the deep, nearly unplayable bunkers lining the entire left side of the hole. Playing into the breeze this hole can be an absolute beast of a par 4. Your drive will need a piercing ball flight to avoid getting swooped off into the desert and wrecking havoc on your score. Your second shot plays well uphill and the green is once again guarded by very deep bunkers. Keep out of them if at all possible and you may have a decent shot at par on this picturesque par 4.
Hole 17 Par 5 - 562 Yards
Soak in the view on this unbelievable par 5! The tee is perched high above the fairway and provides your last great view of the golf course before descending down to a wide fairway. The left side is to be avoided as the cart path and desert start to push right and cut off some of that landing area. Chances of driving to your ball to the creek that crosses the fairway are slim, but a huge shot with no headwind could get there. A solid drive will provide you an option of hitting this green in two though. The elevation cuts off some of the yardage and can get you antsy to swing away at a water guarded green. Laying up is the smart play and there is a large section of fairway over the creek and before the pond that guards the green. Keeping your approach shot left will keep the ball dry and may even provide a solid kick right on the putting surface. Everything works to the right and towards a large bunker or the water. Birdie is for sure in play on this amazing par 5.
